Released in 1972, the VH Valiant Charger 770 SE 340, commonly referred to as a VH E55 was ChryslerAustralia’s competitor against Holden’s HQ Monaro 350 V8 and Ford’s XA Hardtop 351 V8. The SE, standing for Special Edition was a short-lived model that became a neat blend of youthful Charger R/T track credibility and Regal 770 Chrysler luxury.
Based on the 770 Charger, only 125 VH SE models were built and only came in three colours – Sunfire Yellow, Lime Light Green and Vintage Red. Visually the E55 SE included white exterior vinyl trim, painted white pinstripe, chrome sill and wheel arch trim, grey grille with red accents and grey rear tailgate garnish. Inside, the prestige all black vinyl trim featured stark contrasting white seat inserts with padded upper and lower dash, while the three-spoke sports steering wheel and machine-turned “fish-scale” Aluminum dash and console screamed race car. The E55 SE used ROH (14” x 7”) alloy wheel with 70-series tyres and discreet SE and 340/4 Barrel badges were the only indication of what was under the bonnet.
Chrysler Australia powered the VH 770 SE with imported 340 V8 engines, which became worthless under new US emission laws. The high-compression 340ci OHV 5.6 Litre V8 was topped by a four-barrel Carter AVS Carburettor and the big-bore twin exhaust headers fed into a single small-bore exhaust twin outlet. Backed by a strengthened Torque-Flite 727 auto and a tall 2.92 four-pinion differential, the VH E55 SE was capable of a substantial 275 bhp (206kW) at 5000rpm and 459Nm of torque at 3200rpm. Although enthusiasts believe that with a decent carby system, dual exhausts, LSD diff and the US sourced 833 manual gearbox the VH E55 could have been a serious threat on the race track. Alas, a fruitful (and expensive) Hemi 6 engine program, local content requirements and costly body modifications along with the Supercar Scare put an end to any V8 R/T Charger pipe dreams but Chrysler Australia never intended the VH E55 SE to be anything more than a limited edition luxurious Grand Tourer.
This Biante 1:18 scale model of the 1972 VH Valiant Charger 770 SE 340 in Limelight accurately replicates Chrysler Australia’s first V8 Charger and depicts the SE as the rare, luxurious performance model that the Chrysler factory intended.
